So I though today I was going to post my final blog, however after reading yet another newspaper article on the subject I have chosen to write a few more. So to those who I will upset with this I apologize in advance this is after all only my opinion for what it is worth. But let’s talk about marriage furthermore lets’ talk about Gay marriage. I think we need to legalize It for all of just get rid of it. Now before some of your heads explode hear me out. First let’s talk definitions : the state of being united to a person of the opposite sex as husband or wife in a consensual and contractual relationship recognized by law : the state of being united to a person of the same sex in a relationship like that of a traditional marriage : the mutual relation of married persons : wedlock : the institution whereby individuals are joined in a marriage : an act of marrying or the rite by which the married status is effected; especially : the wedding ceremony and attendant festivities or formalities : an intimate or close union Okay so some definitions do say opposite sex and some say same sex. No clear cut winner with definitions Now some Examples of Marriage as a word in real life use.
1. It was his second marriage.
2. They have a very happy marriage.
3. Her first two marriages ended in divorce.
4. She has old-fashioned ideas about marriage.
5. Couples living together before marriage
6. Many friends and relatives were present at their marriage.
7. A priest who has performed many marriages
8. A marriage of sweet and spicy flavors
9. A marriage of science and art
So marriage isn’t even always between people but it can be between ideas. Now back to the subject of marriage as it is known for in this discussion. The origin of marriage is from the Anglo-French word marier or to marry first used in the 14th century. It was used to help distinguish women to a man for the purposes of property for the record. So the word itself is not an old word but fairly recent. Hmm… The idea of marriage has not always been one of; one man and one woman, and has not always been one of forever; many cultures find plural marriages acceptable and historically marriage is not a forever proposition; ie your wife dies you took another etc... The version of marriage that is being defended today is the Victorian ideal of marriage. Personally I loved the Victorian times, great tableware, great clothes, however the ideals not so great. Marriage itself like so many other things is great as an idea but not so great in inception. Relationships are hard, loving someone is hard, and commitment is hard. I don’t need a piece a paper to know how I feel about Troy. I also didn’t need a judge to tell me my marriage to Rob was over. However modern society and laws dictate certain constraints and we have fallen victim to them. I know many gay couples that have better relationships than straight couples I know. Marriage is about love, honor, commitment, honesty, trust, and friendship not about a piece of paper but that piece of paper gets you a safety and security in the laws eyes should something happen. Life insurance, retirement, simpler things like access to the checkbook are easy if you’re married, not married that’s much, much harder. As for giving the title of domestic partnership sorry no dice; the Supreme Court ruled separate but equal is not equal and I think this applies to gay marriage as well. Marriage is marriage. I think if you are lucky enough to meet someone who you want that level of commitment with then no one, not the court and society should be able to tell you that you can’t have it. The only ones who are going to really benefit from gay marriage are the wedding planners and divorce attorneys anyway! Also a brief word on Divorce, I don’t think it should be as hard or as costly as it is. Take what you put in and split the rest, Alimony so women I don’t believe in it; get of your asses and get a job! I didn’t take alimony in my divorce and frankly I have no respect for anyone who does. When you know it’s over just be done with it, don’t drag it out. Marriage end, relationships end but every ending is a new beginning.
